Crypto Exchange Youbit Bites Dust After Second Hack

Youbit, which operated as a cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea, announced news on Tuesday that it would file for bankruptcy following a hack that stole 17 percent of the company's crypto "assets." This is the second hack to hit the company. The Telegraph noted that in the first one in April, as many as 4,000 bitcoins were stolen, allegedly by North Korean hackers. This recent loss was smaller, the firm said, but did not quantify it. The Korea Internet & Security Agency, which is a South Korean intelligence service, is currently conducting an investigation. Reuters reported Youbit also revealed that customers' crypto holdings will be marked down to 75 percent of their value, and that trading has stopped. The company is among the "smaller players" in South Korea's cryptocurrency arena. Another company, known as Bithumb, dominates the landscape, with 70 percent of that country's trading.  (Source: PYMNTS)

Amazon to strengthen fintech space with stake in Capital Float

Online retail giant Amazon is looking to expand its footprint in the financial technology space and is in talks to invest in digital lending startup Capital Float. A third person said that Amazon may invest $5-10 million as an extension of the recent round raised by Capital Float, but this could not be independently confirmed. Bengaluru-based Capital Float, which has so far focused on small businesses, is also set to start consumer financing on Amazon's platform, apart from the ecommerce seller financing it already does, they said. Capital Float had recently raised $45 million (Rs 293 crore) in a Series-C funding round led by Silicon Valley-based Ribbit Capital, with participation from existing investors SAIF Partners, Sequoia India and Creation Investments. As per the company's recent MCA filings, the company was valued at Rs 836 crore ($125 million) before the fund was raised meaning. If concluded, the deal will add to Amazon India's portfolio of investments in the fintech space apart from online financial services marketplace BankBazaar and gifting and loyalty points player Qwikcilver, even as it continues to build its consumer-focused payments business under Amazon Pay to take on Alibaba-backed Paytm and Flipkart's Phonepe. Bloomberg adds altcoin data to Terminal service

Bloomberg is to provide forex traders with pricing on alternative virtual currencies, including Ether, Ripple's XRP and litecoin, alongside bitcoin charts as speculative investors pile into crypto-markets. Bloomberg first added bitcoin pricing data to its Terminal service back in 2014. Recent volatility in the market has seen prices surge dramatically, lifting interest in alternative currencies. Ripple's XRP, Ether and litecoin have each benefited from the spike in bitcoin trading, driving valuations to new highs. The financial data provider has yet to officially comment, although a report in Fortune suggests that data for the new cryptocurrencies is being provided by Luxembourg-based exchange Bitstamp.
