1.JustPark: £3,514,110

After achieving its first two exits in 2015, the equity crowdfunding market is all grown up. We take a look at the year that was.

Crowdfunding projects, from artists' ventures to Kickstarter campaigns, have been around for years.

But equity crowdfunding, when investors front up cash in return for a stake in the company rather than rewards or products, is much newer.

Luke Lang, co-founder of Crowdcube - which in September became the first equity-based crowdfunding platform to hit £100m in capital raised - called 2015 "a breakthrough year" as major venture capital funds invested in start-ups through crowdfunding websites and entrepreneurs turned down Dragons' Den offers to raise through crowdfunding.

This was also the year that saw the first equity crowdfunding exit, when E-Car Club, the electric car sharing business, which raised £100,000 from 63 investors in 2013, was sold to Europcar in August.

Camden Town Brewery, after raising £2.75m in April, was snapped up by beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev in December.

Challenges remain, though. "What happens after the fundraising - do the companies succeed? Is the retail audience educated enough to make an investment decision? Will they ever invest more than a little sum of money?" said Dan Ridett, CMO of Crowdsurfer, which tracks data about the crowdfunding market. "The big question in equity crowdfunding is one of trust."

But with several companies raising into the millions and two exits under its belt, equity crowdfunding has become a mainstream way of raising capital.

As the market comes of age, these are the biggest deals of 2015 in the UK.

15. ToxiMet: £1,596,040

ToxiMet's technology allows non-scientists to detect and measure food toxins without having to send the morsel to a lab for lengthy and expensive tests. It raised £1.6m on SyndicateRoom in February.

14. Pod Point: £1,677,620 (so far)

This round hasn't even finished yet and it has made the top 15. Pod Point raised £1.52m on Seedrs in February, and now it's back for more. The electric vehicle charging company is now trying to raise £1.5m on Crowdcube for 6.05pc of its equity before the end of December, and has already surpassed its goal. More than 500 people have backed the business, with one investor injecting £500,000.

13. The Diabetic Boot Company: £1,764,493

Now called Pulse Flow Technologies, the Diabetic Boot Company raised almost £1.8m to finance development of its product, which uses biotechnology to heal foot ulcers caused by diabetes and prevent limb amputation. The fundraising round, which was hosted on SyndicateRoom, was led by Jim Mellon, "the UK's answer to Warren Buffett".

12. Pavegen: £1,903,400

Pavegen raised 253pc of its £75,000 target on Crowdcube in July, attracting 1,474 investors, one of whom put in £85,000. The London-based company creates flooring that captures and recycles the kinetic energy of the footsteps. One of its most recent projects is a football pitch in Nigeria that uses the energy to power floodlights.

11. Hochanda: £1,962,744

Offering 16.8pc of equity in return for £1.9m, Hochanda just broke through its goal on Crowdcube in November. The Peterborough-based business, which calls itself the "home of crafts, hobbies and arts", launched a TV shopping channel on Sky and Freeview.

10. Adzuna: £2,112,916

Adzuna, the jobs search engine, raised 140pc of its £1.5m target in July on Crowdcube. The largest single investment was £200,005 but the total pile was collected from 481 people. The founders met in the executive team at Gumtree and reunited after exits at Qype and Zoopla.

9. Hybrid Air Vehicles: £2,196,870

Hybrid Air Vehicles raised slightly more than its £2m target for 6pc of equity, reaching more than 900 investors to fund its low-carbon aircraft, which can fly for weeks and take off from land, water or ice. One person invested £275,000 in the Crowdcube round.

8. Seedrs: £2,500,008

Why shouldn't a crowdfunding company be able to get in on the action? Seedrs, one of the largest equity crowdfunding websites, listed itself on its own platform and raised £2.5m by selling 8.3pc of its equity. Tennis star Andy Murray invested in several start-ups through Seedrs this summer, and then joined the company's advisory board.

7. eMoov: £2,622,960

The online estate agent, which is backed by James Caan, reached 262pc of its goal on Crowdcube in October. The company offered 12.1pc of its equity and 765 investors jumped on the deal, with one splashing £575,000.

6. Camden Town Brewery: £2,750,860

Camden Town Brewery, which raised £2.75m from 2,173 Crowdcube users in April, became the second exit for the equity crowdfunding market when it was sold to beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev in December.

5. 1Rebel: £3,000,000

Just over a year after raising £1.5m on Crowdcube, boutique gym chain 1Rebel is back. Some 460 investors participated in this round, with the largest single investment hitting £300,000.

4. Assetz Capital: £3,204,750

The largest funding round hosted on Seedrs this year, Assetz Capital raised £3.2m in May. The peer-to-peer lending platform aims to fund £1bn of loans by the end of 2016.

3. Sugru: £3,388,150

Sugru, the world's first mouldable glue, smashed through its £1m target on Crowdcube, ending up with 338pc of its goal amount. More than 2,300 investors took part, with one person pumping in £1m, for 12.4pc of equity. The year the project launched, Time Magazine named Sugru as one of the 50 best inventions in the world.

2. Chilango: £3,433,010

Almost 1,500 Crowdcube users participated in Chilango's fundraising round in December, with one person parting with £400,000. The Mexican fast food chain wants to use the capital to expand across the UK and internationally. It also raised £2m through a Crowdcube bond in June and has attracted investments from the executives at Carluccio's, Domino's and Costa Coffee.

1. JustPark: £3,514,110

The largest equity crowdfunding round of the year, held on Crowdcube, was raised by JustPark in March. The sharing economy start-up, which allows users to rent out their unused parking spaces, aimed to raise £1m for 14.9pc of equity and left with more than £3.5m. Half a million pounds came from one single investor.
