Lendix

Arjun Ram Meghwal

Banks and Tech Firms Battle Over Something Akin to Gold: Your Data

Technology start-ups like Mint and Betterment have been building services that pull together your bank account and credit card records - after you supply the passwords. But now big banks are making a concerted push to set new restrictions on how technology companies can get access to this personal financial data, in some cases refusing to pass along information like the fees and interest rates they charge.

Corporations are eager to gain access to the digital trails that people leave behind to determine which products are marketed to what consumers and at what prices. The data - and who can have access to it - ultimately affects how much people pay for everything from a home loan to car insurance. (Source: The New York Times)

Seizing the opportunity: How innovation and economic uncertainty can reshape supply chain finance

SMEs have historically been unable to access finance that could have fuelled growth. If this lost opportunity wasn't bad enough, it is further compounded by the fact many businesses now risk being exposed by working capital shortfalls, at a time when traditional products could add the greatest value.

Thankfully technology and innovation is beginning to change that and a number of new providers have been able to develop platforms that lower costs, provide greater flexibility and have reshaped risk/reward profiles. This evolution is also good news for investors allowing them to put large amounts of capital to work over a short investment period to generate yield in a low interest rate, low growth environment. Lendix expands to Spain

Lendix - a French marketplace lending platform for SMEs - has been authorized by the Spanish regulator, and will soon be launching an offshoot in Spain. Lendix closed a €13.5m Series B investment round in April, a round led by the French insurance firm CNP Assurances. The company indicated at the time that it intended to use the funds to expand into Spain and Italy.

Lendix joins MyTripleA, a peer-to-peer lender for small businesses, and the equity crowdfunding platform Crowdcube Spain in getting the green light from the Spanish Securities Exchange Commission (CNMV). Lendix is recruiting 6 people in Spain in 2016 and will consider an additional 10 hires throughout 2017 to build out the team. The Spanish operation is scheduled to go live in Q4 this year. The platform will facilitate loans of between €30k and €2m for terms of 18 to 60 months. Interest rates range from 5.5% to 12%. (Source: AltFi)

Indian Minister Terms Bitcoin to be Illegal in Parliament

An Indian minister, while replying to a question in writing in the upper house of the Indian Parliament - The Rajya Sabha - has said that the use of Bitcoin in India is not authorized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and could potentially land users on the wrong side of the anti-money laundering provisions present in the Indian law.

The Minister of State for Finance, Arjun Ram Meghwal, has filed a written reply to a question in the Parliament according to India's The Hindu newspaper:

"The absence of counter parties in usage of virtual currencies, including Bitcoins, for illicit and illegal activities in anonymous/pseudonymous systems could subject the users to unintentional breaches of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism laws." AI and IoT Driving InsurTech Investment Boom: Accenture

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are dominating insurtech start-up spending according to a report from research firm Accenture. The report, titled "The Rise of InsurTech", said AI and IoT now account for almost half of total investment in insurance technology (insurtech) startups globally.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform the insurance industry from simply assessing risk based on past experience to monitoring risks in real-time and mitigating, or even preventing, losses for customers. IoT will enable insurers to offer more-personalised, real-time service; boost operational efficiency; and price their products with greater precision. (Source: Which-50)

Peer-to-peer lending bosses split on whether to become a bank

UK's largest peer-to-peer/marketplace lender CEOs outline two very different visions of the future.

Funding Circle and Zopa don't disagree on much. But when it comes to whether or not to launch a bank, CEOs Samir Desai and Jaidev Janardana have reached a divergence point.

Desai was critical of "lending-as-a-service" integrations, which broadly speaking entail platforms letting banks make use of their technology. Desai said there is "only one winner" in such arrangements.

Janardana confirmed in his speech that Zopa will be using deposits to fund loans through the marketplace and pointed to PSD2 regulations as a disruptive force that will shake up current accounts, preventing incumbent banks from continuing to use current accounts to "own" customers. (Source: Altfi)

Cute polyphonic touch synth designed for creative fun

For the last few years, Skot Wiedmann at the University of Illinois has been teaching electronics and music to students using a build-it-yourself mini touch synth called the Hyve. Now he's taken the 60 voice analog polysynth to Kickstarter to get it into the hands of more music makers, with backers offered fully-assembled, naked and board-only versions to get their creative juices flowing.

The Hyve's main playing area is roughly divided into two main areas. The honeycomb-like upper section has been arranged so that notes which sound good together are placed near each other, and each fingertip-wide hexagon registers pressure and horizontal position. (Source: NEW ATLAS)
