At $200 million, Tezos ICO is already the biggest ever, and it's still going strong

Right now, Tezos — a blockchain startup you've probably never heard of — is raising money through an initial coin offering, or ICO. Tezos has raised $206 million in about four days, and the sale is scheduled to continue for eight and a half more days.

Unlike many other recent ICOs, Tezos is not based on Ethereum. Instead, it operates on an entirely new blockchain, a "self-amending cryptoledger" that rewards developers who upgrade the network's protocols and allows for "seamless," consensual upgrades of those protocols. Tezos tokens, Tezzies or XTZs, can be purchased with both Bitcoin and Ethereum. And purchased they are: At the time of this writing, Tezos has raised 52,795 BTC and 269,118 ETH, for a total of over $206 million at current prices. This already makes the Tezos ICO the largest in history. (Source: yahoo)

Chinese internet giant Tencent launches WeChat Pay in Europe to challenge Alibaba’s Alipay

Chinese internet giant Tencent launched its WeChat Pay payments service in Europe on Monday, challenging rival Alipay, which is owned by rival Alibaba's affiliate Ant Financial.

WeChat is a giant social media service that has 938 million monthly active users. Tencent has partnered with German payments firm Wirecard to allow European retailers to accept WeChat pay as a payment option. The move is specifically aimed at Chinese tourists coming to Europe and is not necessarily a challenger to the likes of Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, both of which operate in parts of Europe. Chinese consumers are very used to using mobile payment services like WeChat Pay for everything from ride-hailing services to shopping. When they go abroad, they want these same services. Tencent Holdings Ltd has applied for a license in Malaysia to offer local payment services via its WeChat Pay, in what would be a first for the platform beyond mainland China and Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is currently the only location outside mainland China where WeChat Pay and Alipay offer payment services executed entirely in the local currency. (Source: nasdaq)
